Loretta DeWitt

Loretta DeWitt is a gifted artist and has paintings hanging on permanent display at Frostberg State University, Maryland, Northwest Visual Art Center, Panama City Florida, and in numerous private collections throughout Maryland, West Viirginia, Virginia and Florida.

LORETTA RECALLS HER EARLY INTEREST IN ART:

When I was four years old, a nice lady that lived up the railroad tracks from my house gave me a box a crayons. I promptly ate three of them. My blood turned red yellow and blue over night (just kidding). I went home and drew my first masterpiece; a mural on the bedroom wall. After a few motivating pats on the bottom, I finally figured out that didn’t work.

My mother, not wanting me to do any more mural work, gave me a brown paper sack to draw on. That’s all the paper she had at the time. I finally figured out what to do with the crayons, other than eat them.

As I grew older I got better at drawing and coloring. I started school and found that I could color and draw better that the others in my class. IThe teacher liked that and she encouraged me a great deal. I soon learned that I could use my abilities to my advantage.

My first real experience on seeing the beauty of color in the world occured about a year later. My father and I were out in the car and he needed to get some gas. He told me to stay in the car, but of course I didn’t listen. I jumped out of the car to ask him something. Just as he was ready to put the nozzle in the gas tank I grabbed his hand causing him to spill gas on the wet pavement. I stood there completely mesmorized with the beautiful colors and shapes that were forming before my startled eyes.

It seemed that all that mattered was my fascination with these images. I entered high school and again the teachers gave me lots of encouragement. When I graduated, I had an art scholarship. Rather than pursue my education, I got married, and eventually had five children. It wasn't until the children were grown, that I resumed my education. I was 55 years old at that time.

I enrolled and took art training at Garrett Community College, McHenry Maryland. Later, I continued my studies in Maryland at Frostberg State University. I went on to teach art in the Virginia Beach School System. I presently make my home in the the Florida Heartland. I'm always at work creating new paintings and drawings.

I love to create artwork that will allow the viewer to see and find images in my work that is unique to the viewer only. It's exciting for me watch someone that is viewing my work and to discover these images in my paintings. I really enjoy sharing my art vision with someone that believes they know little or nothing about art. When I create a new painting, I'm very excited both visually and emotionally about moving the color and images around the paper or canvas. When I am painting it seems like time stands still; rather like I'm in a hypnotic state. I believe that creating a painting gives me some control over the universe that is unique only to myself. I makes me feel like I am in communication with the great one I want to be able to transmit this emotion and joy and love my in in my work to the viewer of the painting.
